Blog #3 for English 101: Perception and ideas of justice in Trifles: Do women and men have different ideas about justice? Why is evidence different for men and
for women? Explain the differences
between ways men and women look at the law in Trifles. When does it seem right to conceal evidence? Why do the women in the play seem more "right" ethically, even though the men have the law on their side? Use at least three examples from the play.
Alternately, you may do a literary analysis by examining one or more of the symbols in the play! Consider for example quilts and quilting, trifles, hidden boxes, the bird and singing, jar of cherries. You may "cheat" by looking at notes at end of play but you need to build your own essay around one or more of the symbols and create a thesis related to the main character!

I do believe that men and women have different ideas about justice. The different ways that the men and women look for evidence in Trifles is that the women look more carefully than the men and the women would take there time and piece everything together unlike the man every little piece of evidence they found they would go to the women and like rub it in there face. to me it does not seem right to conceal evidence in a case. lets say if it is something small like for your best friend and she took something from the strore not like killing someone. Nothing life or death like that i would seem that conceal of evidence is right. I do believe that the women seem more right ethically because in the play women are just people that clean and do everything around the house they have no rights or anything and the fact that these women cover up for the lady is right to them because the women have to have each others back because the men wont. The men believe that they have the higher power and that women are not really anything. I love how in the play you see the similarity on how the guys neck was strangled and it was because he hurt the bird the same way. The bird did symbolize something to the women. She felt trapped and that bird mean alot to her and the way he just killed it. I strongley believe that the women was right for covering up for her.
ReplyDeletei think yes men and women have slightly different ideas about justice, men view it as something that is rigorous and un-bending and woman may view it as subject to exemptions. the men have this macho bravado attitude about their authority and purpose, almost pigheaded. they make a huge scene every time they pass through the kitchen. they really believe they are superior to the women. so when they decide to start their investigation in the bedroom, they couldn't be more misguided. especially since the attorney was convinced that Mrs. wright was guilty he failed to put his head in the mind of his perpetrator. however, the women being women already had the necessary mindset to really stumble upon all the evidence. i think it was just to conceal the incriminating evidence because given the ladies insight about the victim, it took away from the severity of his death because he was a crappy person. however, in a perfect world i think concealing evidence is wrong so i cant argue to that effect however i do think extenuation circumstances justify bending the laws, because every case is unique. the women were right because in that era of "man's law" they couldn't present there information and think the men will even listen to their insight and instead, jump straight to a guilty conclusion. also they know that the attorney has a bias opinion he says how he knows she did it but he lacked a motive to present to a jury. also the women are smarter than they appear, they were aware that the attorney was diminishing her thought process because when they were in the kitchen talking about the quilt and how Mrs. Wright had knotted the quilt he says "well that's interesting, I'm sure." ( dont know how to cite this)
ReplyDeleteso I think you are suggesting that because the women know they would never have a voice (be listened to) in a way they use their voice silently....right? very interesting!
Deleteyea that and and a combination of luck
DeleteI believe woman and men have different ideas of justice, As shown in Trifles.Evidence for men and women were different. The women looked for evidence in the kitchen which was where the woman send most her days. They examines everything she would possibly do on a regular basis. They examined the things she asked for. They examined the quilt and notice she messed up on a snitching which was very odd in their days. They figured she was nervous about something. They notice she had a cage but it was empty. They checked her little box and notice the dead bird whose neck was broken. They talked about how the lady was a bird herself. They solved the crime their self they came to the conclusion that he broke the birds neck who was basically her so she hung him.Doing the same thing she did to her emotionally. The men looked for the evidence at the crime scene. They checked the windows , they checked the barn, they checked everywhere but the kitchen. With the little they will find they will tell the ladies as if they were better. It was like they were saying hahahaha look what we found. It seems right to conceal evidence when you understand why the person will do it.If you can actually feel their pain and she that they are right. The woman in the play seem "right" ethically because they know the type of man he was. They know that he killed the lasy's life , that he took away her freedom.
ReplyDeleteI like your point that he took away her freedom and she did to him what he had done to her--well said!
Deletewomen and men do have different views in justice because to me , women are more soft while men are more harsh. In Trifles , the men we cocky like every time they found a piece of evidence they will shove it in the women face not knowing that the women also have evidence. to me it showed that the women were more grown up then the men. the women were more smarter in the situation because they took more time too actually look around and no rush while the men seem like oh okay Mrs. Wright is a women so therefore they thought that it will be more easier to find evidence. when the women found the dead bird in the case , they put two and two together and realized that she did kill her husband because he killed her bird. I kind of understand why they withdrew evidence because the men kept making them feel like just because they were women that they couldn't find anything.
ReplyDeleteabsolutely right that the women come off the intelligent ones in this play and they win by concealing the evidence!
DeleteWomen and men do have different ideas of justice. In the play Trifles the women felt like justice was served because they knew how unhappy Mrs.Wright was because of her mean husband. The women know Mrs. Wright before she was married and know how she was so they understand why she killed her husband because he made her miserable and took her happy spirit away. The men just was focused on solving the mystery and finding evidence on the case. So they can just put mrs.wright in jail. They were belittling the women say all they care about is trifles and there the ones who solved the case. The evidence for the women were all in the kitchen. that's where women did the most in the house. The men didn't really find evidence they were mostly looking for a motive they already had her guilty in there minds.
ReplyDeleteIt seems right to conceal evidence when it comes to loyalty. If its family or close friends and its not life threatening then I believe it's okay. Espically if its just hiding evidence like in this play. I think it was right that the women stuck together because they knew that her husband was mean to her. He treated her like the bird locked up and snapped the neck almost like killing her emotionally and the women understood that. The women seem more ethical because they are sticking together because men aren't on there sides. Like in the beginning when the women moved closer together. Another reason the seem more ethical is because ether sympathized with her by wishing they would of came over more to be with her while she was going through such a hard time. Lastly because they weren't cracking under pressure and they were worried about her preserves something they know she would probably care about the most.
I admire your emphasis on the women's emotional knowledge and closeness--they literally move closer together as you say...
DeleteWomen and men do have different ideas of justice. In the play Trifles, women feel that justice takes some part because their always the ones to put things together and when things fall apart the men go to them to put the pieces together. In a way it seems as if the men are on top and the women are down below because the men are upstairs half of the time and the women are downstairs in the kitchen doing the dirty work. The men want to be looked at as if they're in charge and the women have no say. The reason I think that is because the men are so concerned about putting the pieces of the case together and taking the responsibility into their own hands. They were saying that they were the ones who solved the case and trying to put the women down as if they didn't take part in any of it. The men checked for evidence on the crime scene. From my perspective I honestly don't think it's right to conceal evidence because if you conceal evidence from some kind of situation from a family member, then that's being a hypocrite. In reality you know what's going on but you decide to not say anything and at the end of it the one that's concealing the evidence will be looked at as a suspect because they knew something all along. In this case, the women are ethically right because they stick together through it all even though the men constantly try to belittle them. They even had sympathy towards the end because they knew they never came over as much as they should have. The women understood that Mrs.Wright was unhappy especially the way he treated her as if she was the bird that was caged up. It was almost as if she was lost spiritually, mentally and emotionally because he made her so unhappy,
ReplyDeletenice point about who is literally "on top" and who is down below! and yes the way the play shows or suggests Minnie Wright being lost, sad, alone, unhappy is quite powerful
DeleteI do believe men and women have different ideas about justice because a woman is more sincere and flexible as appose to a man who are more hard headed and demanding. Evidence is different for men and woman because a woman is more likely to find evidence like they are used to it, while men aren't used to find evidence because the woman is kind of supposed to know better in a way you can say. They look at the laws differently in a way in which the women understand where she's coming from because they knew her before the incident so in their eyes shes kind of right for what she did because she couldn't take anymore, the men were looking at it like she was evil and every piece of evidence they would throw it at her face like so she can regret or feel terrible for whats shes done event though that isn't the case. It seems right to conceal evidence when the person is right for what they've done. In the play the woman seem more right ethically because fir starters Mr.Wright killed Mrs.Wright first even though it wasn't physically it was still mentally and emotionally. She's also right because he was a horrible man and eventually a woman reaches her breaking point and cant tale it anymore and that's exactly what happen she was fed up. Lastly you can look at the situation as you get what you give, Mrs. Wright killed him the same way he killed her bird, if he knew better he would have done better, there's no way you kill a woman's last bit of happiness left on top of all the torment and expect her to continue to act like everything is fine.
ReplyDeleteand flexible can mean open to emotional truth? where the men are "hard headed" meaning they follow the letter of the law? good insight
ReplyDeleteI do believe men and women has different believes in justice because men seem to think they are above women. And men are more for them self like they don't really unite like women do. Like in the play trifles the women knew that mrs. Wright killed her husband but they didn't rat her out instead they helped her and hid the evidence. They also have more of a connection because the men couldn't find anything but the women did. Like mrs. Wright didn't really have to say much for the other women to know what was going on and led them to the evidence. For example when they found the dead bird in her things they knew that she didn't kill the bird and over thinked what could have happen and ended up coming up with the conclusion of what has happen. Unlike the men , if they would have found the bird they would have automatically thought she killed the bird and would have thought "oh so that means she killed her husband as well." Which also proofs that women are more mature then men. I think it's ok for a women to conceal to help another person out for a good reason. Like the women knew mrs. Wright was right because her husband did kill her mentally. He wasn't fair and it's like mrs. Wright was already dead. Like she had nothing else to loose because mr. Wright had already took her spirit and freedom away. So she felt like it was right to take his life away like he did to her.
ReplyDeleteInteresting idea that the women are more mature Emily--that maturity is about thinking about why someone did something and what it means before passing judgment!
DeleteYes women and men have different ideas about Justice because women are more concerning, precise, and reasonable while men have a set mindset, and are demanding. Evidence is different for men and women because men can look right at the evidence and walk right by it like it's not there, while women pay close attention to little details. In the play Trifles men look at the law in the way that their always right, their alway above the women. Every time they found evidence they would stick it in the women's faces. While the women would do anything for their friend, hiding evidence, especially because they weren't there for her when she need them the most. It seems right to conceal evidence when the women find out that Mrs.Wright was going through a terrible time with her now dead husband. The women in the play seem more right because they understand what Mrs.wright went through, they know how hard it is to be a women. Mrs.wright was dealing with a man that had no heart, so when he killed her bird, that was the last straw so she tied a knot that hung him , and it symbolized the damage he did to her now put on him. Just as well as the quilt they had it symbolized the women being one and sticking together no matter what, so covering up for her was justice.
ReplyDeleteYour point about the men having a "set mind" is a good one--and yes the women are more concerned, (emotional?) --there is something about their intuitive insight that beats the men who look all over and see nothing!
DeleteMen and women do indeed have different ideas about justice. In Trifles, the women take the story very personal, they relate to Mrs. Wright because they understand what she endured. Besides, they feel quite guilty for not supporting her in the past. So they decide to protect their friend by concealing the evidence . While, the men just want to find the killer.
ReplyDeleteAt first the women spend their time waiting for the men, they later start finding evidence by simply looking around in the kitchen and questioning everything they see. That is how they find the crucial evidence, proving who actually killed the man.On the other hand, the men overlook the little things because they think that the evidence would be something big, so they keep on leaving the kitchen.
Even though the man have the law on their side, I do not see them as smart people I rather see them as chicken running without a head. By trying to show how important they were they ended up without evidence. I applaud the women for being right in their actions. They took time to really analyze the situation, which proves that they are the smart once in the story, they show great maturity by doing so.
I like your distinction between seeing and overlooking--the men are so caught up in the ritual behavior of finding the killer, they miss everything--and yes the play does make us applaud the women!
DeleteMen and woman definitely have different views of justice woman take a it a little more personal than men. They pretty much sit back and hope things will come to them when woman take inisutive in understanding Mrs. Wright and what she has done and been through in the past with Mr. Wright . So they decided to protect there friend and evidence while the men just want to find the killer. The woman spend most of there time in the beginning waiting on the men until the woman realized most of the evidence was in the kitchen where the men would never look , they had a better advantage. Even through the men always have the law on there side there not really as smart as the woman by trying to be better than the woman they end up finding no evidence and that leaves the woman on top. The woman show great maturity by proving that they are ahead of the situation.

Yup--the women definitely have the upper hand which is ironic as the men think they are in the more important space--upstairs! And the women ferret out the truth in the space of "trifles"!
DeleteWomen and men do have differnt views of justice because we think differently. Not in all cases, but in a good amount of them? yes. In "Trifles", men look at justice by the law while women look at justice by passion. The women feel that the husband being killed WAS justice because he killed his wife emotionally, while the men are seeking justice through out the story AFTER the kill. It seems right to conceal evidence when you have a good reason for breaking the law. The women seem more correct even though the men have the law on their side because in this situation the husband was cruel and evil to his wife and killed her bird, which I personally agree was a just reason to get rid of him. I feel like she served justice on her own because the court definatley would not have been on her side. She was destroyed by her husband emotionally so she wanted to destroy him completely and be FREE.
ReplyDeleteAnastasia--I like your distinction between the law and passion (or at least emotion); the fact that Mr. Wright killed his wife emotionally is a central thread to the way they review the story and pass judgment!
DeleteBetween men and women, both have different set of value between whats consider justice and what is not. usually both sides will usually defend and pick usually girls will help out girls while the boy will help out the boys. in the play, the other women helped out ms wright even after they found out she killed her husband. because not only did they feel bad for her but it was also because it's helping her out in the end, because they knew she wasn't happy being in her home. and at the same time, the guys were only trying to prove the right of founding the killer because that is the "justice" thing to do. so for most occasions, most of the time, guys will always defend (and have their back) for the guys, while the girls will be the same for the girls.
ReplyDeletebut you also suggest Jodie that the women have different ideas about what is right or just, no? It matters to the women that Minnie Wright was unhappy; that isn't even on the radar for the men!
