"the hunted and the hated; an inside look at the NYPD stop and frisk policy"

this video is evidence on the harassment that civilians experience at the hands of the NYPD. additionally it discusses how NYPD officers are forced to meet an unknown quota otherwise they are subject to being penalized. this evidence supports the belief that stop and frisk is a bad policy because police use gestapo like tactics on innocent civilians based soley on their own bias and beliefs.

    1. I think you can do a lot with this Matthew--look also for statistics on minorities being targeted in higher numbers than whites...you probably need several cases to build argument--what suggestions would you have for changing police policy, training, attitudes???

"Stop and Frisk Law is Racist and the Shame of New York City . While other statistics show that the majority of stops and frisks occur in communities with the most violent crime rates, such as Brownsville in Brooklyn, the practice creates more friction, mistrust, and fear of authority (specifically the NYPD) than it actually stops crime. These same communities that are being targeted by the stop and frisk policy are the most disenfranchised, the ones with the least economic resources, and those who are already scarred by systematic racial profiling and major incidents of police brutality. Needless to say, there is an abundant amount of literature and various studies that link poverty and crime and could help provide the foundation for a better, alternative policy. Frisk is a great example of an ineffective policy that, under the guise of upholding public safety, actively isolates and violates already disempowered communities of color. The areas this usually happens in are crown heights , Flatbush, coney island , and etc because those areas are know to have colored people there and or mischievous activities" . i believe that the stop and frisk law is not being used correctly by the NYPD, police officers abuse the right because they think they have control over people . Not saying that all cops are the same but the detectives are usually the ones rougher than the suites.

    1. very important to note neighborhoods where stop and frisk is most practiced--what you have above is mainly a quotation--I assume from the article--at the end you state your position but you need to research more and clarify evidence of police bias--then think about what should be done?

    "Stop-and-frisk" The High School Senior"

This video clarifies the stop and frisk policy because it's self evidence from a young african-american young boy who has been stopped and frisk more then one time. He discusses how no one should feel afraid when the NYPD officers are in the community. Everyone one should feel comfortable going to them for help or say hello to them without being accused of being "sarcastic". This supports that this stop and frisk policy shouldn't exist any longer, because as this young individual mentions that in Flatbush,Brooklyn more then several people get stopped and frisk a day. Not only because the environment isn't as safe all the time but because they see someone wearing a hood over their head or looking at the police officers as they drive by as if it's an illegal thing to do. It shows that the stop and frisk policy is nothing but stopping the innocent ones that have a suspicious look in the eyes of police officers.

    1. Joellie--you are right that this video shows the harm done by this policy--the mistrust created as innocent teens are afraid to be in their neighborhoods--find more examples and build your essay around them--look for classic article by Brent Staples on walking through a Chicago park...with hoodie

i decided to research citizens rights instead of stop and frisk because i feel like the reason for so many unlawful searches being made is because people do not know what to say and do when they are stopped. The first link i have posted is more easier to understand and its more of ways on how to act and what to say when you are being unlawfully searched by a police officer. The second one is more legal and a bit harder to understand but i truly feel that so many citizens, especially young adults, don't know what to do when they are being stopped and frisked.

"the hunted and the hated; an inside look at the NYPD stop and frisk policy"

This is a video that hurts me every time I watch it. It is a primary source, very reliable. The focus of this video is how civilians of color (African American/hispanic) are treated by the NYPD. The issue relates directly to Stop & Frisk but focuses on Racial Profiling. 9 out of 10 Stop and Frisks on Hispanic/Black civilians are innocent, yet they are treated like criminals. NYPD needs to do a certain amount of Stop & Frisks in a certain time period otherwise they are punished. This is illegal, to use "quotas" but this is a law that is broken by NYPD every day. It is a very deep, sad video.
